Migration guide · Updated July 2026

Howitzer Alternativefor people who need Reddit leads without cold DMs

Howitzer's Reddit DM automation was withdrawn in 2023 and howitzer.co now redirects to HeyReach, a LinkedIn tool. ParseStream covers a different job — finding the public threads where people are already asking for what you sell, across Reddit, X, LinkedIn, Quora and Hacker News from $29/month. This page is explicit about what that does and does not replace.

Status

Howitzer is no longer available. Its archived FAQ from April 2023 states that “Howitzer's messaging feature has moved to private”, leaving lead extraction only; its Reddit product site has returned a server error since at least December 2023; and howitzer.co itself has redirected to heyreach.io since at least February 2025 — still the case when we checked in July 2026. There was no migration path for Reddit customers.

The short version

Nothing replaces Howitzer feature-for-feature, and that is the point

Howitzer did one thing: it built lists of Reddit users who had posted about your keywords, then sent them automated, personalised private messages and chats at scale. That job has largely stopped being available as a product, because Reddit's own spam policy prohibits “repeated or unsolicited actions (whether automated or manual)” and names “sending large amounts of unsolicited chat or private messages” as an example of what violates it.

ParseStream is not a DM tool and will not become one. It watches your keywords across Reddit, X (Twitter), LinkedIn, Quora and Hacker News, uses Lead Detection to decide which mentions are genuine lead opportunities, tags intent, and drafts a reply you edit and post yourself — in the public thread, where the question was asked. Plans are $29, $79 and $199 a month with a 3-day free trial.

So if you are here because you want the DM firehose back, read the “who each option fits” section before starting a trial. If you are here because your pipeline died with Howitzer and you want a version of it that does not depend on a platform tolerating unsolicited outreach, that is the job ParseStream is built for.

ParseStream vs Howitzer, feature by feature

The Howitzer column describes the product as it was publicly documented on its own site before it wound down, from Internet Archive captures. It is here to help you work out what to replace, not to suggest the tool is still available.

Howitzer rows are taken from Internet Archive captures of howitzer.co and reddit.howitzer.co made between June 2022 and September 2024. Those pages are no longer maintained and no later product documentation exists, so anything we could not confirm is marked as not documented rather than asserted.

01

What actually happened to Howitzer

Howitzer did not close on a single announced date, which is part of why so many former users describe it as having simply evaporated. The wind-down happened in stages across roughly two years, and each stage is dated in the public record.

The first and most consequential step came early. By an April 2023 capture of its product site, Howitzer's own FAQ answered the question “What happened to the messaging part of Howitzer?” with: “Howitzer's messaging feature has moved to private. Now, you can use Howitzer to extract potential leads from Reddit using our two search features.” The reason it gave was internal — the team wanted to “focus on our bigger vision entirely” — and the same page carried a banner announcing HeyReach, the LinkedIn tool that became the company's main product. In other words, the thing people paid Howitzer for was switched off roughly two years before the domain stopped resolving.

What was left decayed quietly. The Reddit product's own site has returned a server error since at least a December 2023 archive capture, and still did when we checked in July 2026. The parent site outlived it: as late as September 2024, howitzer.co was a company page listing two products, HeyReach for LinkedIn and “Howitzer for Reddit”, the latter by then described only as a way to “find potential leads on Reddit, engage with their posts and comments, or manually reach them through chat”. Note the word manually — the automation was already gone from the marketing copy.

Then the parent site went too. Archive captures show howitzer.co returning a 404 in January 2025 and a redirect to heyreach.io from February 2025 onwards. That redirect is still live as of July 2026. Type howitzer.co into a browser today and you land on a LinkedIn outreach product with no Reddit functionality, no explanation, and nothing addressed to Howitzer's former Reddit customers.

02

Why the Reddit DM-outreach category stopped working

Two forces closed in on it at once, and both are still in force, so they matter when you choose what to use next.

The first is supply. Reddit began charging for its Data API in 2023; by June that year, developers of major third-party Reddit apps were publicly saying the new pricing made their products financially unviable. Howitzer's own co-founder later described the same period in blunt terms, telling Swiss EP that “by mid-2023, Reddit's API crackdown, user backlash, and monetization headwinds left the team on the verge of collapse” and that “in July 2023, we were literally two months away from bankruptcy”. A business whose entire cost of goods is one platform's data has very little room to absorb a change like that.

The second is policy, and it is the one people skip. Reddit's spam policy tells users not to “use Reddit for repeated or unsolicited mass engagement”, defines spam as “repeated or unsolicited actions (whether automated or manual) that negatively affect redditors, communities, and/or Reddit itself”, and lists “sending large amounts of unsolicited chat or private messages” among the things that may violate it. Reddit's Developer Terms separately prohibit using Reddit's services and data “to spam, incentivize, or harass Users”. Bulk cold DMs were never on a stable footing, whatever the API cost.

To be precise about attribution: we have found no public statement from Reddit about Howitzer specifically, and we are not claiming one exists. What is on the record is the founder's own account of the API crackdown, Howitzer's own note that messaging “moved to private”, and Reddit's published rules. The inference that the two are connected is ours, and it is offered as an argument rather than a fact.

03

Read this before you start a trial: ParseStream sends no DMs

We would rather lose the signup than have you discover this on day two. ParseStream does not send direct messages or chats on Reddit or anywhere else, does not build lists of usernames to contact, does not supply sending accounts, and has no bulk-messaging feature on its roadmap. If a one-to-one replacement for Howitzer's outbound motion is what you need, ParseStream is the wrong product and the sections below explain what to look at instead.

The reason is not squeamishness. It is that the outbound motion is the part of the workflow with the platform risk attached, and building a business on it means inheriting Howitzer's exact exposure. Any tool selling automated Reddit DMs today is operating against the same published spam policy, on the same platform, with the same enforcement discretion sitting over it. Some of them are good products. All of them carry that risk, and a lower monthly price does not offset it.

There is also a practical argument that has nothing to do with policy. Cold DMs work by interrupting someone who did not ask. Public threads work by answering someone who did. The second has a worse volume ceiling and a much better conversion story, and it leaves an artefact — a comment other people find later through search — that a private message never produces.

04

What ParseStream does instead

You give ParseStream keywords rather than a target audience: your product name, your competitors' names, and the phrases people actually type when they are shopping for something like you. It then watches Reddit, X (Twitter), LinkedIn, Quora and Hacker News for those phrases in new posts and comments.

Matching is the easy part; the value is in what happens next. Every match runs through your AI Filter and through Lead Detection, which checks the mention against your brand context to work out whether it is a real lead opportunity or a keyword collision. Intent Detection then tags what the person is actually doing — expressing buy intent, describing a pain point, complaining about a competitor — so a queue of a hundred mentions sorts itself into the six worth your afternoon.

Suggested Replies drafts a response in your voice, grounded in that brand context and in the thread it is answering. You read it, change what is wrong with it, and post it yourself in the thread. ParseStream never posts on your behalf; automatic posting is switched off server-side, deliberately. Notifications go to email or Slack so the mentions worth acting on reach a human while the thread is still live and the comment can still earn upvotes.

The unit of work, in other words, is a public comment on a thread where someone asked a question you can answer — not a message in a stranger's inbox.

05

Rebuilding a Howitzer workflow without the DMs

If your Howitzer routine was “run a query, export a list, send 50 messages a day”, the translation is not one-to-one, but the underlying targeting instinct transfers almost completely.

Start with the queries you used to run, and turn them into keywords rather than list-builders. The phrase that made someone worth messaging is usually the same phrase that makes their thread worth replying to. If you targeted people who mentioned a competitor in r/SaaS, monitor that competitor's name and use Subreddit Filter to hold it to the communities that mattered.

Add your domain during brand setup before you judge anything. Lead Detection and Suggested Replies both lean on brand context, and their output is noticeably worse without it. This is the step people skip and then blame the filtering for.

Recalibrate the volume expectation deliberately. Howitzer's own archived pricing sold 30 to 100 messages a day, and even then its FAQ advised sending “no more than 50 messages per day per account”; a realistic public-reply cadence is a handful of genuinely useful comments a week. You are trading reach for durability — the comment stays up, keeps getting found, and does not put an account at risk.

Finally, do not switch on all five platforms on day one. Start with Reddit and Hacker News, which are included on every plan, get your filters calibrated on a source you know well, then add Quora, LinkedIn and X once you trust what is coming through.

06

Where Howitzer's users went

Honestly: nobody has published anything credible on this, and you should be sceptical of anyone who claims otherwise — including us.

Every “Howitzer alternative” page we found while researching this one was published by a tool that wanted to be the answer. This page is one of them. None of them has migration data, because Howitzer never published customer numbers at the end and never announced a formal closure with a destination attached.

What can be said is that the category split. Some former users went to the surviving Reddit DM and managed-outreach tools, inheriting the platform risk described above. Some moved the outbound motion to LinkedIn or email, which is effectively what Howitzer's own team did. And some rebuilt around public engagement, which is the lane ParseStream sits in. Which of those is right for you depends far more on your appetite for account risk than on any feature table, this one included.

Who each option actually fits

Howitzer is gone, so the honest comparison is between ParseStream and the tools that still sell cold Reddit outreach.

Best for

ParseStream fits you if…

You want the leads without owning the platform risk of cold DMs.

  • You want to be told when someone publicly describes a problem your product solves, and to answer them in the thread.
  • Your buyers are not only on Reddit — you also care about Hacker News, X, LinkedIn or Quora.
  • You would rather leave a comment that keeps getting found in search than a message that disappears into an inbox.
  • You want the noise qualified before it reaches you, not a raw list of usernames to work through.
  • You want reply drafts that speed up a human, with a human posting every one of them.
  • You are budgeting $29–$199/month with monthly billing rather than an annual contract.
Best for

A cold-outreach tool fits you better if…

This is the job ParseStream deliberately does not do. Say so out loud before you buy.

  • Volume outbound is the model: you need to contact hundreds of people who have not asked to hear from you.
  • You need lists of user handles exported for use somewhere else — ParseStream produces mentions, not contact lists.
  • You want sending accounts, proxies and inboxes managed for you, the way Howitzer's plans included them.
  • You accept that Reddit's spam policy prohibits repeated or unsolicited mass messaging, and you are willing to carry that risk on the accounts you use.
  • You have already decided that DM reply rate beats public-comment durability for your business — which for some outbound-led teams is a defensible call.
