GEO & AEO: How to Get Your Brand Cited by ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI

Ranking first is no longer the same thing as being the answer. AI engines summarise, and what they quote is increasingly a forum thread rather than a landing page. This guide covers where those citations come from and what you can actually do about it.

The short answer

What are GEO and AEO, and how do you get cited by AI engines?

Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) and Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) mean earning a citation inside the answer that ChatGPT, Perplexity or Google AI Overviews generates — not just a ranking underneath it. Because Reddit is the single most-cited domain across the major AI answer engines, with Quora and Hacker News featuring heavily too, the fastest route to a citation is usually a genuinely useful reply in a conversation those engines already read.

ParseStream monitors the conversations across Reddit, X (Twitter), LinkedIn, Quora and Hacker News, tells you when a citable one starts, and drafts a Suggested Reply you edit and post yourself. Real upvotes from real people do the rest.

What do GEO and AEO actually mean, and how do they differ from SEO?

SEO optimises for a position in a list of links. GEO and AEO optimise for inclusion in a generated answer — being the sentence the model paraphrases and the source it footnotes. The acronyms are used almost interchangeably in practice; where people distinguish them, GEO refers to generative engines that write an answer, and AEO to answer engines more broadly, including featured snippets and voice results.

The distinction that actually matters is not the acronym. It is that the unit of success changed from a rank to a citation, and citations are awarded to passages rather than pages.

The Princeton and Georgia Tech research that started it

The term comes from a 2024 KDD paper by Aggarwal, Murahari, Rajpurohit, Kalyan, Narasimhan and Deshpande, out of Princeton and Georgia Tech. They built a benchmark of generative-engine responses and tested which content changes actually increased a source's visibility inside them.

The finding that has held up best: adding statistics, quotations and citations to a piece of content produced the largest gains, up to roughly 40% on the paper's Position-Adjusted Word Count metric. Keyword stuffing — the reflex borrowed from classical SEO — performed poorly. In plain terms, generative engines prefer text that is specific, attributable and quotable, which is a fairly good description of a well-written forum answer.

Why ranking first no longer guarantees you get cited

A generated answer is assembled from passages retrieved across several sources. Position one is one input among many, and the model's preference for a directly-worded, specific passage frequently pulls a fourth-place forum thread ahead of a first-place marketing page written to hedge.

Ahrefs studied 300,000 keywords between March 2024 and March 2025 and found clicks fell 34.5% where an AI Overview appeared, with position-one CTR dropping from 7.3% to 2.6%. That is the strategic argument in one number: the ranking still exists, but a growing share of its value now sits inside the answer above it.

02

Where do AI engines actually get their answers from?

Disproportionately, from places where humans answer each other. Profound analysed more than 4 billion AI citations across 300 million answer-engine responses between August 2024 and October 2025 and found Reddit is the single most-cited domain aggregated across all major AI answer engines Profound tracks — 3.11% of all citations, ahead of YouTube at 2.13% and Wikipedia at 1.35%. Search Engine Land reported the same Reddit-first ordering from an independent analysis of 30 million sources by Peec AI, which also put Reddit first, followed by YouTube and LinkedIn.

Why forums dominate AI citations

Part of the answer is commercial. Google signed a data-licensing agreement with Reddit in February 2024, reported at around $60 million a year, giving it a structured feed of Reddit posts and comments to train models and improve Search. Content flowing through a supported pipe is easier to use than content scraped from an unpredictable web.

The rest is editorial. Forum threads are written as direct answers to specific questions, they contain first-hand detail a vendor page cannot credibly claim, and they carry a crowd signal — upvotes — that maps neatly onto a retrieval system's need to rank candidate passages. A model choosing between a marketing page saying “the leading platform for teams” and a comment saying “we ran it for eight months and the export broke twice” will pick the comment.

Why every engine cites differently — and why that matters

Citation share is not a stable property of a domain. It is a property of one engine at one moment. Semrush tracked more than 230,000 prompts across ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Perplexity over 13 weeks in 2025, covering over 100 million citations, and watched Reddit's ChatGPT citation share fall from roughly 60% to about 10% while remaining stable on the other two. That 60%-to-10% figure is the share of ChatGPT's own responses that cite Reddit — a different metric from the 3.11%-of-all-citations aggregate above, not a contradiction of it.

The lesson is not that Reddit stopped mattering. It is that any AEO strategy built on one engine's current snapshot is fragile. The durable version optimises for the thing all of them share — being the clearest, most specific, most obviously human answer to a question people are genuinely asking — rather than gaming whichever retrieval mix is in production this quarter.

The GEO/AEO playbook, step by step

You cannot submit yourself to an AI engine's citation list. What you can do is be present, in a useful way, in the conversations those engines already draw from — and let the ordinary signals of a good answer do the work.

The AI citation flywheelA clockwise loop of four stages: monitor the conversations AI engines already cite, reply manually with something specific and genuinely useful, earn upvotes and replies from real people, and get cited in ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews — which feeds the next loop.Every loop compoundsmore upvoted answers, more citations1Monitor the conversationsthe threads AI engines already cite2Reply, manuallysomething specific and genuinely useful3Get citedin ChatGPT, Perplexity, AI Overviews4Earn upvotes and repliesreal people vote your answer up
A loop, not a funnel: the upvotes a genuinely useful reply earns are what make the next citation more likely.
  1. Step 1Add your brand or domain

Give ParseStream your website, what you sell and who buys it. This brand context is what Lead Detection uses to judge whether a given conversation is genuinely relevant to you — which, for citation purposes, is the same question as “would an answer from us actually help here?”

  2. Step 2Add keywords across Reddit, X, LinkedIn, Quora and Hacker News

Track the questions people ask, not the terms you would bid on. AI engines answer questions, so the conversations worth joining are the ones phrased as questions: “best X for Y,” “is X worth it,” “alternatives to X,” “how do you handle Y.”

Quora and Hacker News deserve specific attention here. Quora still lands in Profound's top ten most-cited domains, and Google AI Overviews in particular pairs Reddit insights with YouTube and Quora — while Hacker News threads are unusually dense with the kind of specific technical detail that gets quoted.

  3. Step 3Get alerted the moment a citable conversation starts

New matches arrive by email or Slack. Timing matters more for citations than it does for plain SEO: the answers that accumulate votes early are the ones that end up at the top of the thread, and the top of the thread is what gets retrieved.

  4. Step 4Prioritise with AI Filter, Lead Detection and Intent Detection

Most keyword matches are not worth your time. AI Filter applies your own plain-English relevance rule to every incoming mention; Lead Detection marks the genuine opportunities against your brand context; Intent Detection tags each one — buy intent, product question, competitor complaint, pain point, testimonial or promotional.

For citation purposes, product questions and buy-intent threads are the highest-value queue. They are phrased the way people phrase prompts, which makes them the threads most likely to be retrieved when someone asks an AI engine the same thing.

  5. Step 5Post a genuinely useful, upvote-worthy reply — manually

ParseStream drafts a Suggested Reply. You edit it into your own voice and post it yourself; ParseStream never posts on your behalf, and auto-replies are disabled at the server level by design.

That constraint is doing real work here, not just covering a missing feature. A citation is downstream of a community deciding your answer was good. Automated posting produces answers that read as automated, communities remove them, and a removed comment is cited by nothing. There is no version of this that works by volume.

  6. Step 6Let upvotes and replies compound over time

A comment's position in its thread is decided by other people. Every upvote makes it more likely to be the passage a retrieval system picks, which makes it more likely to be cited, which brings more readers to the thread. That loop is the whole mechanism, and it is why this is a months-long play rather than a campaign.

The honest constraint: you cannot shortcut it with multiple accounts. Vote manipulation and astroturfing violate Reddit's content policy, they are detectable, and the reputational cost of being caught vastly outweighs a citation. Follow each community's rules, disclose that you build the product when you mention it, and let a smaller number of genuinely good answers accumulate.

04

What makes a reply “citable” by an AI engine?

The GEO paper's findings and the practical behaviour of forum readers converge on the same three habits. Write for the human and the retrieval system gets what it needs as a by-product.

Answer clearly and specifically in the first sentence

Retrieval systems extract passages, not whole comments. A first sentence that states the answer outright is a complete, self-contained passage; a first sentence of throat-clearing is not. The same property makes the comment scannable for humans, which is why it also earns upvotes.

Include a number, a comparison or a concrete detail

This is the single strongest finding in the GEO research: adding statistics and citations lifted visibility in generative responses by up to roughly 40%. It also happens to be what makes a comment believable. “It handles high volume” is unquotable; “we pushed about 40,000 events a day through it and hit one rate-limit issue” is both quotable and checkable.

Structure a long reply with a short list

If your answer genuinely needs several points, three or four short bullets beat a dense paragraph. Structured text is easier to extract cleanly and easier to skim, and a comment that is easy to skim is a comment that gets upvoted. Do not manufacture structure for a two-sentence answer — a bulleted list of one item reads as formatting for its own sake.

Never invent the number

There is an obvious failure mode in a technique whose headline finding is “add statistics.” Making up a plausible-sounding figure will earn a citation for exactly as long as it takes someone to check it, and forums are unusually good at checking. A fabricated number that gets quoted into an AI answer is worse than no citation at all, because it attaches your brand to a correction.

Quote numbers you can point at, say where they came from, and use ranges or hedges when your own data is thin. “Roughly a third of our accounts, though our sample is small” is both more honest and more credible than a confident invented percentage — and it is still specific enough to be quotable.

05

What GEO and AEO cannot do for you

The category has attracted a lot of confident claims in a short time, so it is worth naming the limits plainly. No one can guarantee you a citation. There is no submission endpoint, no verified-source programme you can buy into, and no schema you can add to a page that makes a model quote you. Anyone selling guaranteed AI visibility is selling something they cannot deliver.

You also cannot control retrieval. Which passages an engine pulls changes with every model update and every change to a retrieval stack you have no visibility into. Semrush's finding that Reddit's ChatGPT citation share moved by roughly 50 percentage points inside a 13-week window is the clearest evidence that the ground moves under any tactic built on a current snapshot.

What you can control is narrow but real: whether the conversations your buyers are having contain a genuinely good answer with your name attached to it. That holds across every engine, survives model updates, and is worth doing even if the citation never arrives — which is the honest test of whether a channel is worth your time.

06

How do you check whether you are already being cited?

There is no console for this yet, so checking is manual and worth doing on a schedule rather than on impulse. The good news is that the check is cheap: ask the engines the questions your buyers ask.

  • Ask ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Mode the exact questions your buyers search — “best tool for X,” “alternatives to competitor Y” — and note whether you appear and what gets cited.
  • Expand the citation list in the answer. If a Reddit or Quora thread is cited, open it and check whether your comment is in the retrieved section or buried below.
  • Repeat the same prompts monthly. A single check tells you nothing; the trend is the signal, particularly given how fast per-engine citation share moves.
  • Watch branded search and direct traffic. Citations often produce no click at all, so a rise in people searching your name with no matching referral is frequently the fingerprint.
  • Track which of your comments earned real upvotes. That is the leading indicator — citations follow community approval, not the other way round.
